TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A ceasefire should be declared in Gaza without delay, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told his U.S. counterpart Antony Blinken on Thursday, October 24, 2024, via phone call, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

Fidan said the humanitarian situation in the besieged northern Gaza has reached catastrophic levels after Israel intensified offensives nearly three weeks ago, highlighting the importance of ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian aid to the territory.

The Turkish diplomat said Israel should end its attacks on Lebanon and underscored that all parties must exercise restraint to avoid a regional war.

The two ministers also discussed the latest situation in Ukraine, where Russia's "special military operation" continues since February 2022 but calls are growing to end it diplomatically.

Blinken also expressed condolences over Wednesday’s terrorist attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) headquarters in Ankara, which claimed five lives and injured 22 others.

Antony Blinken has embarked on a Middle East tour to kickstart another round of Gaza ceasefire talks with Israel. According to Reuters, U.S. and Israeli negotiators will gather in Doha, Qatar, in the coming days to restart talks toward a deal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.

Gaza’s ministry of health said on Thursday that at least 42,847 people have been killed as a result of Israeli strikes, most of whom women and children. The tally includes 55 casualties in the previous 24 hours, the ministry said. Meanwhile, 100,544 others have been injured in the Gaza Strip in the year since Israel intensified its onslaught in the enclave.
