TEMPO.CO, Germany - German police on Saturday, December 21, 2024, revealed that the attacker at a Christmas market in the heart of Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, faces several charges of murder and attempted murder. The attack on Friday afternoon shocked Germans and again highlighted the issue of migration in Germany.
The attacker, who is now in custody, is a 50-year-old psychiatrist from Saudi Arabia. The perpetrator has lived in Germany for almost two decades and is a permanent resident. As of this writing, the motive for the attack is still unknown. Police have only assured that a criminal investigation is underway, but have refused to provide further details.
On Saturday evening, December 21, 2024, around 2,100 people from the German right-wing group demonstrated in Magdeburg. The demonstrators wore black headscarves and carried banners that read "remigration," a popular term among the right-wing, which is eager to carry out mass deportations of immigrants and people of non-German ethnicity. Other Germans gathered to pay their respects to the victims of the incident.
The front yard of St John's Church in Magdeburg, close to the scene, was filled with flowers of condolence. Mourners had come to the site over the weekend.
"This is the second time I've been here. I was here yesterday. I brought flowers and it really touched me," said local resident Ingolf Klinzmann.
Among the dead were a nine-year-old boy and four women aged 52, 45, 75 and 67. About 40 people were reported to be seriously or critically injured.
Authorities said the attacker used an emergency exit to drive his vehicle into the Christmas market and drove into people gathered there. More than 200 people were injured in the three minutes after the incident. The attacker was incapacitated at the scene. German authorities have not yet named the attacker, but German media have identified him as Taleb A. No further information has been released on the attacker's identity due to local government privacy laws.
