TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Along with the rising popularity of concerts, a new travel trend is expected to emerge in 2025: gig-tripping. This involves planning domestic or international trips centered around attending concerts or music festivals.
Gig-trippers often go beyond just attending the concert. They explore also take this opportunity to explore tourist attractions around the concert venue. For instance, fans of artists like Justin Timberlake and Billie Eilish, who are scheduled to perform in Berlin, can combine their concert experience with a city break.
Major music events, such as Coachella and Taylor Swift's global tours have attracted thousands of international visitors. This surge in music-related tourism presents an opportunity for destinations to promote their offerings and attract visitors beyond the concert itself. This was what was done by Visit Greater Palm Springs in Coachella Valley.
Social media has also influenced the rise of gig-tripping. The fear of missing out (FOMO) has compelled many to travel long distances to attend concerts and share their experiences online. Additionally, the stylish and adventurous nature of gig-tripping has made it a popular subject on social media platforms.
According to Skyscanner, 44 percent of travelers in the United States are willing to fly short distances to see their favorite concerts, and 18 percent are even willing to embark on long-haul journeys.
Moreover, over half of young adults aged 25-34 plan to attend international concerts or festivals in 2024. These statistics highlight the great potential of gig-tripping to become a new habit among music-loving young people.
In 2025, music fans will have ample opportunities for gig-tripping, with major tours from artists like Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Green Day, and Blackpink. As more artists embark on global tours, gig-tripping is predicted to become an increasingly popular travel trend, blending music, adventure, and cultural exploration.
