TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hezbollah has halted attacks on northern Israel and on Israeli troops in Lebanon in the early hours of Wednesday as part of the announced U.S.-Iran ceasefire, three Lebanese sources close to the group told Reuters, according to a report by The Straits Times.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who played a key intermediary role in the ceasefire talks, said the two-week truce would also cover Lebanon, where a new war between Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel broke out on March 2.
Reuters reported last month that Iran wanted Lebanon included in any agreement it reached with the United States.
DW reported separately that Israel has continued strikes on southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire announcement and has issued new evacuation orders to residents in the area.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the two-week truce does not apply to Israel’s operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Hezbollah is expected to issue a statement later on Wednesday outlining its formal position on the ceasefire and on Netanyahu’s assertion that Lebanon is not included, the three Lebanese sources said.
The group’s last public statement on its military activity was posted at 01:00 AM local time, saying it had targeted Israeli troops inside Lebanon on Tuesday evening.
More than 1,500 people have been killed in Israel’s air and ground campaign across Lebanon, including 130 children and more than 100 women.
