TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A hypersonic missile attack by Yemen's Houthi group has hit Israel. Through a Telegram account reported by Euronews, the Houthis said they had directed a hypersonic ballistic missile at an unidentified military target.
About 16 people were injured by glass fragments after a rocket fired from Yemen hit the Jaffa district of Tel Aviv, Israel, on Friday night. Another 14 people suffered minor injuries as they rushed to shelters when air raid sirens sounded before dawn on Saturday, the Israeli military said.
The Houthis issued a statement on Telegram claiming responsibility for the attack. They said they had directed a hypersonic ballistic missile at a military target.
"A flash of light, an impact, and we fell to the ground. Huge chaos, glass fragments scattered everywhere," said Bar Katz, a resident of the damaged building.
The attack came after Israeli airstrikes on the Houthi-held Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and the port city of Hodeida killed at least nine people on Thursday. The Israeli strikes were in response to a long-range Houthi missile that hit a school building in central Israel.
The blast shattered windows and injured bystanders.
The Houthis also claimed a drone strike on an unspecified military target in central Israel on Thursday. The Israeli military says the Iran-backed Houthis have launched more than 200 missiles and drones during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
The Houthis have also attacked shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. They say they will not stop until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Israeli strikes on Thursday caused major damage to the Houthi-controlled Red Sea port. "This attack will reduce the port's capacity," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
Hodeida port has been key to delivering food to Yemen in its decade-long civil war. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the attacks by both sides risked escalating the Middle East.
