TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) stated that it is studying and investigating reports about the flow of money from illegal miners to police officials in West Sumatra. The flow of money occurred even though illegal mining practices have contributed to environmental damage, and even caused fatalities.

The testimony came from the case of a police shooting at a police officer in South Solok Regency, West Sumatra. It was also reported that illegal mining was made 'sustainable' because the mining proceeds flowed to, among other things, national strategic projects (PSN).

Kompolnas member, Gufron, said that the investigation into the report included digging further if additional evidence was obtained. "To then be followed up through clarification of its handling to the local police," said Gufron when contacted, Sunday, December 22, 2024.

Gufron emphasized that the problem of illegal mining practices would not be left behind in the case of police shooting violence. According to him, this is important to maintain police professionalism and ensure that violence by officers does not happen again.

Kompolnas, in accordance with its existing authority, promises to continue to monitor and supervise violence and the involvement of police officers in the practice of blocking illegal mining activities. The method is by encouraging and ensuring that internal mechanisms in the police work effectively, accountably, and transparently in resolving the case.

Reports of illegal mining activities protected by police officials, and even the mining results absorbed by PSN, came from the West Sumatra Environmental Forum or Walhi together with representatives of traditional leaders in Nagari Lubuk Aluang, and the Walhi National Executive. Complaints were made directly to the Kompolnas office in South Jakarta on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

"The crime of peti (mining without a permit) has undermined the state's authority in the face of environmental crime syndicates," said the Head of the Advocacy Department of Walhi West Sumatra, Tommy Adam, in a written statement, Friday, December 20, 2024.

Tommy presented information from the ethics trial of the suspect in the police shooting case, Adjunct Commissioner Dadang Iskandar, on November 26, 2024. The contents include stating that the South Solok Police Chief received funds from illegal mining activities in South Solok Regency amounting to Rp600 million per month since taking office.

With this information, said Tommy, it is strongly suspected that at least the South Solok Police Chief has received a total of Rp16.2 billion in illegal mining funds during his 27 months in office. "The source of the funds came from deposits for the use of 20 units of heavy equipment, one heavy equipment deposited Rp25 million, and deposits for crates that did not use heavy equipment," he said.
