Indonesia Demands UN Probe into Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Lebanon

7 hours ago 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Umar Hadi, demanded a swift, thorough, and transparent UN investigation into the Israeli attack in southern Lebanon that killed three Indonesian soldiers during a UNIFIL mission in late March 2026.

The Indonesian government also requested that the Security Council firmly monitor and follow up on the results of the investigation, and hold the perpetrators legally accountable without any immunity in the attack on the Indonesian peacekeepers.

Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on the Situation in the Middle East on Tuesday, Umar strongly condemned the attack on UNIFIL troops on March 29 and 30, 2026.

Indonesia also urged all parties, including Israel, to cease aggression and comply with international law to ensure the safety of personnel and the protection of United Nations assets.

Umar emphasized that the safety of peacekeepers must be a top priority, including through emergency measures to strengthen personnel protection amid the escalating conflict on the ground.

These measures include reviewing security protocols and activating evacuation plans tailored to the evolving situation in the conflict zone in southern Lebanon.

The Security Council was urged to reaffirm the principle of protecting peacekeepers and take concrete steps to ensure their safety from further attacks.

Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to world peace and urged the Security Council to act decisively, unitedly, and clearly in response to the incident.

He stated that Indonesia, along with France, requested the Security Council meeting as a demonstration of its long-term commitment to UN peacekeeping operations since 1957.

Umar expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the attack that killed three Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldiers and expressed his appreciation for the solidarity of Security Council members and the international community.

He paid tribute to Infantry Captain Zulmi Aditya Iskandar (33), Sergeant First Class Muhammad Nur Ichwan (25), and Private First Class Fahrizal Rhomadhon (27), who died in the line of duty.

Fahrizal died at the UNIFIL post in Adchit Al Qusayr, while Zulmi and Muhammad were killed in an attack on a logistics convoy in Bani Hayyan.

Indonesia considers the attack unacceptable and a major loss for Indonesia, the UN, and the international community that upholds peace.

In addition to the fatalities, five other personnel were injured: Captain Sultan Wirdean Maulana, Corporal Rico Pramudia, Corporal Arif Kurniawan, Corporal Bayu Prakoso, and Private Cadet Deni Rianto.

"These peacekeepers died and were injured while carrying out the Security Council's mandate," said Umar.

Indonesia urged the swift, safe, and dignified repatriation of the remains and requested optimal care for the injured personnel to ensure a full recovery.

He rejected the notion that the victims were in an active war zone, emphasizing the importance of identifying those responsible for the escalation of the conflict.

According to Umar, the tension in southern Lebanon was triggered by repeated Israeli military attacks that violate Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Indonesia considers the increased attacks on UNIFIL in recent weeks to be a systematic pattern intended to undermine the mandate of Resolution 1701.

These attacks pose a serious threat to global peace and could potentially constitute war crimes under international law, he said.
