TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has limited the purchase of subsidized fuel such as Pertalite and Solar to 50 liters per day from April to May 2026. Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that this regulation is based on a circular issued by the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas). "Referring to that and it will apply for 2 months," he said during a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Monday, April 6, 2026.
Prior to this, there was a Decree from the Head of the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) Number 024/KOM/BPH.DBBM/2026 which was established on March 30, 2026. The implementation of the restriction on the purchase of subsidized fuel is regulated for private and public vehicles.
The 2-month implementation coincides with 8 policies regarding the national work culture transformation. The key points in it include the implementation of working from home for civil servants (ASN) every Friday, travel efficiency, and the recommendation of WFH one day a week for state-owned enterprises, regional state-owned enterprises, and private companies.
Although subsidized fuel purchases are restricted, the government has not yet decided on a plan to limit non-subsidized fuel. "It is still being studied, when the study is completed, it will definitely be conveyed to the public," said Airlangga.
This restriction effort is in response to the soaring crude oil prices in the global market, which have reached above US$100 per barrel. The price increase is due to the conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran since February 28, 2026.
Despite the rise in global oil prices, the government is committed not to raise the price of Pertalite and Bio Solar fuel until the end of 2026. Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said that the 2026 State Budget is estimated to have a 2.9 percent deficit even though the burden of fuel subsidies has increased.
He estimated that the oil price would not remain at US$100 per barrel for a long time, considering the current politics in the United States. "For example, if the price goes even higher, uncontrollably. As long as there is a supply of oil, we still have a reserve fund of Rp490 trillion, which is currently in the form of a surplus budget, in case of emergency, it can still be used, " he said on the same occasion.
