TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto received a visit from Singapore Armed Forces Chief Aaron Beng at his office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. They discussed several cooperation plans between the countries' defense agencies, including cybersecurity.
The head of the Information Bureau of the Secretariat General of the Defense Ministry, Brigadier General Frega Wenas Inkiriwang, said his agency is interested in exchanging knowledge with Singapore regarding the development of cybersecurity. Moreover, Singapore has formed a specific branch on cyber called the Digital and Intelligence Service. The Singapore Cyber Force was formed in 2022.
"We want to learn from Singapore, and they are also willing to share their knowledge," said Frega at the Ministry of Defense office in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
According to Frega, the Singapore military's cyber force has become a permanent institution despite it being new. The cyber force, he said, is positioned equally with their army, navy, and air force.
Frega warned that digital threats are not limited to fraud or scams, but cybersecurity serves a more strategic implication for national security.
"Cybersecurity has become a central issue pivotal for the people," he said.
Therefore, Frega said, the cooperation plan with Singapore will be further discussed, both by the Indonesian Armed Forces and the forces specifically tasked with handling the cyber domain.
The formation of a cyberforce, or the fourth branch in the Indonesian Military has been a topic of discussion in recent months. TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto said the military has recently formed a Cyber Unit tasked with strengthening the TNI presence in the digital world.
According to him, the TNI Cyber Unit recruited civilians with expertise in the field of information technology, including hackers. "I have formed a Cyber Unit where I recruited hackers and people who have cyber capabilities," said Agus during a meeting with the House of Representatives Commission I at Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
In a separate statement, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin emphasized that the Cyber Unit is separate from the TNI branch, so it has a different recruitment process compared to TNI soldiers.
