TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono met Ambassador of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, on Monday, February 3, 2025, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in various strategic fields, especially in food and energy security, trade and investment.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a written statement on Tuesday, February 4, explained that during the meeting, Sugiono pushed for the utilization of Iran's sophisticated nanotechnology and biotechnology to support food resilience through the development of agricultural technology.
Both Sugiono and the Iranian ambassador also discussed the potential for energy security cooperation, including investment in the renewable energy sector.
Meanwhile, in the health sector, Indonesia and Iran have also had quite advanced cooperation, including through the construction of the Robotic Telesurgery Center and the development of telemedicine in various regions in Indonesia.
Indonesia and Iran are also exploring opportunities for educational cooperation for Indonesian health workers to learn health technology in the Middle Eastern country.
In the tourism cooperation sector, Sugiono and Boroujerdi discussed the opening of direct flight routes between the two countries.
This year, Indonesia and Iran commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations. Sugiono and Boroujerdi appreciated the various achievements of the existing cooperation and hoped for further progress under the administration of President Prabowo and President Pezeshkian.
Sugiono and Boroujerdi also stressed the urgency of the unity of Islamic countries in supporting Palestinian independence. Both countries share the same principles regarding Palestine and base their position on the full independence and liberation of Palestine.
The value of Indonesia-Iran trade cooperation reached US$257.2 million in 2022. This figure increased by 23 percent from 2021. In June 2024, Indonesia and Iran signed a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) that allows both countries to secure or improve their market access.
Both countries also reached agreements in the science and technology sector, halal product guarantees, energy sector development, regulation of pharmaceuticals, biology, traditional medicines and processed foodstuffs.
There are also documents on visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders, mutual administrative assistance in the field of customs, trade promotion, and cultural exchange programs.
Iran and Indonesia are also exploring the establishment of business-to-business agreements, investment in the construction of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), investment solutions in the oil and gas sector, railroad signal technology and joint research cooperation in technology transfer and assembly.
