TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) has officially appointed Patrick Kluivert as the new head coach of the Indonesian National Team. He succeeded Shin Tae-yong, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further two-year extension.
“Kluivert will be supported by a team of assistant coaches, including fellow Dutchmen Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat, alongside two Indonesian coaches,” the PSSI announced on its official website on Wednesday, January 8, 2024.
Prior to his appointment, Kluivert most recently coached the Turkish club Adana Demirspor. He also served as the director of the FC Barcelona academy. Kluivert is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia on January 11, 2024, with an official public introduction slated for the following day.
“Kluivert's tenure will commence with 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Australia at the Sydney Football Stadium on March 20 in Sydney and Bahrain at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on March 25,” PSSI wrote.
A legendary player for the Dutch National Team, Kluivert was a striker for top European clubs including Ajax Amsterdam, AC Milan, Barcelona, Valencia, Newcastle United, PSV Eindhoven, and Lille.
Since retiring as a player in 2008, the Amsterdam-born coach began his coaching journey as an assistant at AZ Alkmaar, NEC Nijmegen, and Brisbane Roar before taking the reins at Jong Twente, where he guided the team to a championship title.
Kluivert also served as assistant coach to Louis van Gaal in the Dutch National Team, which secured third place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In 2015, he led the Curaçao national team for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and the 2017 Caribbean Cup of Nations qualifiers. His resume also includes roles as sporting director at Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona academies, head coach of the Ajax A1 (U-19) team, and assistant to Clarence Seedorf with the Cameroon national team.
