TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government officially handed over death row inmate Serge Atlaoui to the French government on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The handover took place at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten.
I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, Acting Deputy for Immigration and Corrections of the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, explained that Atlaoui would be transferred via KLM flight KL 810, departing Jakarta for Amsterdam at 7:25 p.m. Jakarta time, before continuing on to France.
“After being transferred, Serge's legal treatment will be fully regulated by French law and procedures,” Surya told reporters at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. He added that the Indonesian government would retain access to information regarding Atlaoui's legal treatment in France.
French Ambassador to Indonesia Fabien Penone expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian government. "On behalf of the French government, I would like to thank the Indonesian government, especially the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, for their excellent cooperation,” Penone said.
According to him, the French government would conduct its own investigation into Atlaoui's case upon his arrival in France.
This transfer followed the signing of a practical agreement between Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra and the French government, agreeing to the transfer of responsibility for Atlaoui's legal affairs. Atlaoui was arrested in 2005 for his involvement in operating an ecstasy factory.
Serge Atlaoui was initially sentenced to death in 2005 by the Tangerang District Court and the Jakarta State High Court for operating an ecstasy factory in Cikande, Tangerang, Banten. He was initially sentenced to life imprisonment on June 22, 2005, but his sentence was changed to death upon appeal to the Supreme Court. Atlaoui was previously held at Nusakambangan Prison in Central Java but was later transferred to Salemba Penitentiary due to cancer.
