Indonesia's Free Meals Costing an Average of Rp10,000 Per Serving, Could Be More in Certain Areas: Nutrition Agency

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency, Dadan Hindayana, asserts that the budget of Rp10,000 per serving for the free meals or the free nutritious meals program is an average figure. The government may increase the budget in certain areas.

Dadan said that the Rp10,000 amount that appears is based on a trial in Java Island for the past few months. As per the initial plan, the government will conduct trials from Aceh to Papua starting in December 2024.

"The President said it's an average figure. In places with higher living costs, it will definitely be more than that," Dadan said after the cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday, December 2, 2024.

Dadan mentioned that the government will obtain calculations based on the average price index unit. "In places where it's less, we will pay at cost. For higher costs, we will also pay at cost. Because what we are paying for is not the meal package, but the raw materials used to cook on that day," he explained.

President Prabowo Subianto conveyed that the government has set the details for the budget of free nutritious meals per child and pregnant woman at Rp10,000. Initially, the government aimed for a budget of Rp15,000 per serving. However, the head of state believes that this allocation is sufficient for the needs in the regions.

Prabowo mentioned this after announcing the increase in provincial minimum wages following a limited meeting at the presidential office, Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday, November 29, 2024. This retired TNI General stated that free nutritious meals are an additional welfare measure for the people.

The National Nutrition Agency targets that the free meal program will cover 82.9 million people by 2027. The government will start a pilot project from Sabang to Merauke on a massive scale starting from 923 points in December and expanding to 2,000 points in April 2024, then 5,000 points in July-August, aiming to reach 82.9 million targets by 2027. The National Nutrition Agency has also developed a unit service basis in regions where one service unit handles 3,000 targets.

According to the State Revenues and Expenditures Budget 2025, the budget for the free nutritious meals next year will be Rp71 trillion. Dadan mentioned that although the cost per serving may vary regionally, there will be no additional allocation for this policy budget.
