TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Semeru in East Java erupted three times on Thursday, August 21, 2025. The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported a surge in volcanic activity of the 3,676-meter-high mountain above sea level.
The mountain, located on the border between Lumajang Regency and Malang Regency, erupted at 05:31 a.m. local time, spewing volcanic ash with a column height of up to 800 meters above the crater. "The ash column is a grayish white leaning southwest," said the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) officer, Liswanto, in a report shortly after the eruption.
A stronger eruption occurred around 05:48 a.m., with the ash column reaching 1 kilometer high above the crater. Liswanto stated that seismograph recordings showed a maximum eruption amplitude of 22 millimeters with an eruption time of about 1 minute and 57 seconds.
At 06:58 a.m., the highest mountain on Java Island erupted again with a volcanic ash column height of 800 meters from the crater. "This eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 millimeters and a duration of 150 seconds," he said.
Mount Semeru is now on volcanic alert Level II. The Geological Agency urges people to refrain from activities within an 8-kilometer radius of the eruption center, specifically along Besuk Kobokan. "Beyond this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan," said Liswanto.
Additionally, residents are also barred from engaging in activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater of Mount Semeru due to the risk of pyroclastic flow. "Beware of the potential for hot clouds and lava flows along the river or valley originating from the summit of Mount Semeru," he added.
