TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Indonesia supports the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant against Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant.
"The issuance of the arrest warrant by the ICC against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant is an important step towards achieving justice for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Palestine," read a statement from the ministry's official account on X, @Kemlu_RI on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
Indonesia also reiterated its support for all initiatives aimed at ensuring accountability for crimes committed by Israel, including through the ICC.
"Indonesia emphasizes that these arrest warrants must be carried out in full accordance with international law."
Indonesia considers this step very important to end Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and to advance the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with the principles of the two-state solution.
On Thursday, the ICC officially issued arrest warrants for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes.
"The ICC hereby issues arrest warrants against two individuals, Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed at least from October 8, 2023, to May 20, 2024," the ICC said in a statement.
The May 20 date mentioned in the statement refers to the date ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan filed a request for their arrest warrants.
In doing so, the court unanimously rejected Israel's challenge to its jurisdiction under Articles 18 and 19 of the Rome Statute.
The court said it had found "reasonable grounds" to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant bore criminal responsibility for "war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts."
The arrest warrant was issued as Israel's genocidal attacks in Gaza entered the second year, killing 44,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children.
Israel's attacks have displaced nearly the entire population of the region amid a prolonged and deliberate blockade that has caused severe shortages of food, clean water, and essential medicines, pushing the population to the brink of starvation.
