TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government responded to the attack on Reynhard Sinaga, an Indonesian citizen convicted of rape, who is languishing in a British prison.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said that the government is seriously monitoring the case as a step to protect Indonesian citizens abroad.

Regarding the stance that will be taken by Indonesia, Yusril stated that the government is still studying the case. "We have discussed a lot about the transfer of prisoners of other countries, we return them to their countries at the request of the country concerned," said Yusril at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections, South Jakarta, on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Like countries that have opened discussions about the protection of their citizens who are convicted in Indonesia, Yusril said that Indonesia also has an obligation to protect Indonesian prisoners abroad.

Yusril said that even though Reynhard has been tried and found guilty by the British Court, the Indonesian government will still study the case of the attack that happened to him.

"Whether it's wrong is another matter, but the state is obliged to provide protection to the citizens concerned," he said.

Meanwhile, Yusril admitted that Indonesia has not yet determined its stance on the Reynhard Sinaga issue. The government is still collecting information and documents to study.

"So the government does not have any stance, but the government is studying this case, monitoring this case," he said. The government also plans to communicate with Reynhard's family to hear what they want. So, Yusril continued, one day the government can draw a conclusion or stance on the issue.

"No matter how wrong our citizens abroad are, we are still concerned with what happened," said Yusril.

Previously, Reynhard Sinaga, an Indonesian man dubbed the most prolific rapist in Britain, had been the target of an attack in prison. The abuse was allegedly a planned attack carried out by prisoners who took the law into their own hands.

Reynhard, 41, was found guilty in January 2020 of committing 159 sexual assaults on 48 men. The crimes were committed after he tricked them into using drugs. He is currently serving a minimum life sentence of 40 years.

"Sinaga was arrogant and hated by everyone. He was clearly a target in prison for his depraved crimes," a source told The Sun, as quoted by the Daily Mail on Monday.

The Indonesian student spent more than a decade drugging and raping men in his Manchester flat. His victims ranged in age from 18 to 36, but the average age was 21, Manchester Crown Court was told.

Most of his victims were schoolchildren and some were still at school. His crimes came to light in June 2017 after his final victim, an 18-year-old rugby player, woke up while he was being raped and fought back. Sinaga was badly beaten and rushed to hospital. Police initially arrested the victim who had beaten Sinaga.

However, after investigators examined Reynhard Sinaga's mobile phone, they found more than three terabytes of videos of the assault and rape.
