Indonesian Govt Offers Fare Discounts for Christmas and New Year Travel

1 month ago 45

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will provide transportation fare discounts for the Christmas and New Year holidays (Nataru) in 2025. This discount is expected to boost economic growth in the second half of the year. This was revealed by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto after holding a coordination meeting with related ministries at his office.

Airlangga said this discount program is similar to the stimulus package given in the second quarter of 2025. From June to July 2025, the government provided five economic stimulus packages that included transportation ticket discounts, toll fee discounts, social assistance, wage subsidies, and incentives for the labor sector. "(Discounts for) planes, tolls, and mostly trains," said Airlangga, when met by reporters after the meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy office, Central Jakarta, on Friday, July 25, 2025.

However, Airlangga said the government will not provide electricity tariff discounts, similar to the second quarter stimulus package. Meanwhile, for Wage Subsidy Assistance, Airlangga mentioned that this stimulus has been disbursed in the second quarter. "The wage subsidy assistance has been given," he said. The former Chairperson of the Golkar Party said the stimulus program would be announced next September.

In addition to providing discounts, the government also agreed to fully bear the Value Added Tax on luxury goods (PPNDTP) by 100 percent for housing. Based on Finance Minister Regulation Number 13 of 2025, the government will bear 100 percent of the VAT on the delivery of land homes or apartment units (flats) for the period from January 1 to June 30, 2025, with a maximum selling price of Rp5 billion.

Then, from July 1 to December 31, 2025, the government will bear 50 percent of the VAT. "It should have been 50 percent for the second semester. It was agreed to remain at 100 percent," said Airlangga.

In the second quarter, some of the provided transportation discounts included a 30 percent discount on train tickets, a 6 percent VAT deduction on flight tickets, and a 50 percent discount on sea transportation. Meanwhile, toll fees were discounted by 20 percent to support national mobility.

Indonesia's economic growth in the first quarter of 2025 was 4.87 percent. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati predicted Indonesia's economic growth in 2025 to be in the range of 4.7 to 5 percent. Previously, the government's goal was to reach 5.2 percent economic growth.

This projection was conveyed by Sri Mulyani in a working meeting with the Budget Agency of the House of Representatives at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. "We estimate economic growth in 2025 to be in the range of 4.7 percent to 5 percent for the second semester. So, overall (growth) between 4.7 percent and 5 percent," she said.
