TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia asks the public not to worry too much about the United States' 32 percent reciprocal tariff policy imposed on imported products from Indonesia. According to him, Trump's tariff policy is normal in the business world.

"Let's not make it seem like the world is coming to an end," said Bahlil at the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

He mentioned that Trump's decision to raise reciprocal tariffs is part of a trade strategy. Such a thing, he said, is considered normal in the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI).

"This is nothing special. In the world of science, in HIPMI, this is normal. You have to create problems first before compromising. So, this is just part of the trade strategy," he said.

Bahlil mentioned the importance of conducting mutually beneficial political and economic communication. He said this is because Indonesia and the United States need each other.

"Because we need each other. We need to build political communication, win-win economic communication, which is mutually beneficial," said Bahlil.

Indonesia has decided to take negotiation steps in response to Trump's tariff policy. This week, the Indonesian delegation team will depart for the United States to negotiate trade tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that negotiations will take place from April 16 to 23, 2025.

According to Airlangga, Indonesia is one of the first countries to be invited to Washington, DC. He mentioned that the delegation team has prepared a fairly comprehensive non-paper or informal document for the negotiation process. These range from issues related to tariffs, non-trade measures, non-tariff barriers, and investment.
