TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Java Regional Police have uncovered an international-scale baby trafficking scheme. The crime is believed to have been ongoing since 2023. "An estimated 24 babies have been trafficked," said the Head of Public Relations of the West Java Regional Police, Grand Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan, in a written statement on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
Out of the dozens of babies, the police have only been able to rescue six. "We found one in Tangerang and 5 in Pontianak," said the Director of General Crime Investigations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Grand Commissioner Surawan. "These babies were intended to be sent to Singapore."
The five babies rescued in Pontianak are currently at the West Java Regional Police Headquarters. Meanwhile, one baby had been secured earlier. "We secured one in Tangerang four days ago," stated Surawan.
According to Surawan, most of these babies are believed to be from West Java and are suspected victims of abduction. "Before being sent to Singapore, these babies were already equipped with fake documents," added Surawan.
The police have currently arrested 12 individuals suspected of being involved in the baby trafficking scheme, all of whom have been designated as suspects. "Some were involved as baby recruiters, even since they were still in the womb. Some were tasked with caring for the babies, providing shelter, and creating fake identification documents," he said.
Evidence such as identification papers, passports, and victim identity documents has also been confiscated from the suspects. Surawan stated that the West Java Regional Police plans to collaborate with the International Relations Division of the Indonesian National Police to dismantle this baby trafficking syndicate. "We are still pursuing leads to find the other babies," Surawan added.
