TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A team of students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Jambi (Unja) is researching the potential of black seed essential oil as a solution for mouth odor. The ongoing research is funded nationally through the Student Creativity Program (PKM) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology in the exact sciences field.
The research, titled "The Potential of Black Seed Essential Oil (Nigella sativa L.) as a Nano-spray Mouth Preparation for Odor Elimination", is conducted by a team of students from the Pharmacy Study Program. The research period is from July 7 to November 3.
The head of the research team and supervisor, Uce Lestari, explained that the research was motivated by the increasing cases of halitosis (bad breath) in Indonesia, affecting around 57.6 percent of individuals. "One potential alternative for dealing with this issue is the use of natural ingredients such as black seed," she said in a statement received by Antara on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
Black seed has long been known in traditional medicine for its antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. To enhance the effectiveness of these active ingredients, the student researchers at the University of Jambi are utilizing nano-technology, which can maintain the stability and improve the absorption (bioavailability) of the essential oil.
"Even with a lower concentration of essential oil encapsulated in nano particles, it is more effective than using pure essential oil," Uce stated as reported on the University of Jambi website.
As a result of the research, they have successfully developed an innovative product in the form of a modern mouth nano-spray called Nigellanano.breathh. This product is designed as a hygienic, practical, and effective solution for naturally combating mouth odor.
This product is the second research development based on black seed essential oil. Previously, Uce had successfully formulated a gel mask from the same essential oil as an anti-acne treatment.
"With this innovation, we hope to encourage the creation of excellent herbal products that can compete in the market and bring pride to the university," said the head of the research team, Septi Hariyani.
Through this research, Septi stated that their team aims to contribute to the development of safe, innovative, and user-friendly herbal-based oral health products. This innovation is expected to increase the value of black seed as a potential natural resource in Indonesia while also promoting the creation of outstanding herbal products from the University of Jambi.
In addition to Septi, the research team consists of Milda Rahayu, Rolita Awrinal Cania, Awra Zikrina Ramadhani, and Sherli Dwina Amanda.
