TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several international airlines on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, announced they would inspect the fuel switch on some Boeing models after the fatal crash of Air India aircraft last month.
As reported by CNA, all the fuel switches on Boeing 787 aircraft belonging to Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot functioned properly and complied with the regulatory requirements, revealed after the inspection conducted on the system.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) conveyed to CNA that they are collaborating with SIA and Scoot to carry out an inspection on the fuel control switches on all Boeing 737, 787, and 747-400F aircraft registered in Singapore.
"There have been no findings from the inspections to date," said CAAS.
India, South Korea, and Japan have reported similar steps after the preliminary report on the Air India crash last month indicated that the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's control was switched from the "run" to the "cutoff" position, causing a fuel shortage in the engine.
India on Monday instructed its airlines to inspect the fuel switches on several Boeing models, after several Indian and international airlines began conducting their own inspections on the fuel switches.
South Korea said it would issue a similar measure, while the Japanese airline JAL said it would "implement any necessary inspections based on its findings."
As reported by Aljazeera, the precautionary measures taken by India and several other countries were implemented even though the aircraft manufacturer Boeing and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had informed airlines and regulators in the last few days that the fuel switch key on Boeing jets was safe.
The key has come under scrutiny after the Air India jet crash on June 12, which killed around 260 people—the worst disaster of its kind in India.
The initial report on the crash by Indian authorities did not draw conclusions or determine who was responsible for the disaster. However, cockpit recordings indicated that one pilot asked another why he had shut off the fuel, and the second pilot replied that he did not do it.
The report noted an advisory from the FAA in 2018, which recommended, but did not mandate, operators of several Boeing models, including the 787, to inspect the fuel cutoff switch locking feature to ensure that the switch did not unintentionally shift.
Several airlines worldwide stated that they had inspected the related changes since 2018 in accordance with the FAA's advisory. This includes Qantas Airways from Australia, as well as ANA and JAL from Japan.
In the last few days, the Air India Group started inspecting the locking mechanism on the fuel switch of its 787 and 737 fleet and so far has not found any issues, revealed a source familiar with the matter.
The initial Air India report stated that the airline did not carry out the FAA-recommended inspection because it was not a mandate.
In an internal memo on Monday, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson stated that the investigation into the crash is "far from over." He added that the airline is open to further investigation and cautioned against drawing "premature conclusions."
