TEMPO.CO, JakartaIsrael has finally admitted to detaining the Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Hussam Abu Safiya. Reported by Sky News, the doctor in Gaza was detained on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities.

Abu Safiya is also accused of being a member of Hamas. Israel has not revealed his whereabouts and human rights groups have raised concerns for his safety.

Kamal Adwan Hospital is one of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza. Hussam Abu Safiya was detained along with dozens of other staff and taken to an interrogation center during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital on December 27.

The Israeli military said they targeted the hospital because it was used as a command center by Hamas militants. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed that the doctor was detained on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities.

Israel also released the last photo of Hussam Abu Safiya as he headed towards Israeli tanks.

The IDF said he is currently being investigated by Israeli security forces.

Human rights activists have raised concerns about the condition of Doctor Hussam Abu Safiya. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said it had received information that her health had deteriorated.

Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, another human rights group, has filed a request for information and a visit from a lawyer on behalf of the family of the hospital director.

Several patients said they were forced out into the cold and told to undress after the raid on the hospital. Confirmation of Dr Abu Safiya’s detention came as Israeli strikes killed at least 30 people in Gaza, including children.

The Israeli army said in a statement again that it had struck Hamas assembly points and command centers. Earlier this week, a new report from the UN Human Rights Office said Gaza’s health system was being brought to the brink of total collapse by Israeli attacks on and around hospitals in the territory.

At least 10 hospitals have been attacked by Israeli forces since the start of the war. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been hit several times over the past three months.
