TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung admitted his surprise at Jakarta's second-place ranking as the safest city in Southeast Asia, according to the 2026 edition of the Global Residence Index.
"I was actually surprised. Jakarta, which has always been ranked below Bangkok, Manila, and Kuala Lumpur, now ranks second, after Singapore," Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday.
Pramono noted that Jakarta achieved this milestone because the capital successfully maintained security and harmony during several major religious festivities.
He cited examples such as the Christmas carols, Cap Go Meh celebrations during Chinese New Year, the torchlight parades and drum festivals during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, and the ogoh-ogoh parade during Nyepi.
"Alhamdulillah, this demonstrates the strength of diversity in Jakarta. It also serves as a showcase or symbol of Jakarta itself," Pramono said.
He also emphasized the need for continued security and comfort in Jakarta to be maintained and improved through collective effort.
Jakarta surpassed several major ASEAN hubs, such as Manila, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur, to secure its position as a top safe city.
Singapore ranked first with a score of 0.90, followed by Jakarta with a score of 0.72. Bangkok came in third with a score of 0.65, followed by Vientiane with a score of 0.61, Hanoi with a score of 0.60, and Kuala Lumpur with a score of 0.57.
Indicators used to determine a city's safety score according to the Global Residence Index include the Numbeo Index, Homicide Rate, Global Peace Index, Security Risk, Political Risk, Natural Disaster Risk, Road Traffic Death Rate, Natural Disaster Death Rate, and Major Conflict Death Rate.
