TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has received two patrol ships from the Japanese government. Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that these vessels will be deployed to safeguard the waters surrounding the new Indonesian capital Nusantara or IKN in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan.
“We will use them for maritime security, and they will also be equipped with weapons owned by the Indonesian Navy,” Sjafrie said after a meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
Sjafrie detailed the specifications of the patrol ships during the meeting with the DPR Defense Commission. He explained that the vessels are 18 meters long, 4.2 meters wide, and can reach a maximum speed of 40 knots. Each ship has a capacity of two crew members and 14 passengers.
He confirmed that these are brand-new vessels, manufactured in Japan. He noted that they will require language adjustments so that the Indonesian Navy (TNI AU) can fully understand their operation.
The ships' small size is a key factor in their planned deployment around the IKN, as it is anticipated they will be able to navigate the large rivers in Kalimantan, including those near the new capital.
The donation of these two ships is part of Japan's official security assistance program. Sjafrie mentioned that Japan is also providing similar assistance to other Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.
He emphasized that the decision to accept this aid from Japan was based on national interests.
The Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto stated that the patrol ships will contribute to meeting the TNI's patrol needs effectively and efficiently. Strategically, these vessels will enhance the supervision and control of Indonesian maritime security.
“This ship is expected to provide a multiplier effect in securing Indonesia's coastal areas,” Agus said during the meeting with the DPR Defense Commission.
During this meeting, the Ministry of Defense sought approval from Commission I of the DPR to accept this assistance from Japan. All factions within the Commission expressed their agreement.
