TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the Jeju Air 7C2216 plane crash has increased to 179. Meanwhile, there are two survivors who are currently being treated in hospital with moderate to severe injuries.
"Only the tail of the plane is still visible, the rest is unrecognizable," said Muan International Airport Chief Lee Jung-hyun.
The two survivors were a male and female crew member. They were rescued from the tail of the plane. Authorities are currently searching the area around the scene to see if there are any bodies of passengers thrown from the plane.
Muan International Airport fire chief Lee Jung-hyun said the fire was only extinguished at 1 p.m. The official cause of the crash has not been announced.
The investigation team is evaluating the possibility of a bird strike as the cause of the plane crash and weather factors. Yonhap news agency reported that airport authorities said the bird strike may have caused the plane's wheels to malfunction.

South Korean interim President Choi Sang-mok visited the Jeju plane crash site. Choi visited the scene hours after the disaster occurred. He immediately declared the area where the plane crashed a special disaster zone.
"The government would like to express condolences to the bereaved families and will do its best for the post-incident recovery process and ensure that a similar incident does not happen again," Choi said.
