TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jeju Air crash death toll rises to 47. A Jeju Air plane overshot the runway and erupted into a ball of flames as it slammed into a wall at Muan International Airport, South Korea, on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024.
Reuters reported that the crash occurred as Jeju Air flight 7C2216 landed at about 9 a.m. at the airport in the southern part of the country, South Korea's transport ministry said. The Jeju Air plane was carrying 175 passengers and six crew on a flight from the Thai capital, Bangkok, to Muan Airport, South Korea.
At least 33 bodies have been recovered but the number is expected to rise, a fire department official said. Two people were found alive and rescue operations are ongoing, a Muan fire department official said.
The official and the transport ministry could not confirm the report of 28 deaths. Yonhap said three people had been rescued.
Authorities were working to rescue people sitting in the tail section, an airport official said.
Video shared by local media showed the twin-engine plane skidding down the runway with no apparent landing gear before it slammed into a wall and erupted into flames and debris. Other photos showed smoke and flames engulfing parts of the plane.
The passengers included two Thai nationals, with the rest believed to be South Koreans, according to the transport ministry.
The plane was a Boeing 737-800 jet operated by Jeju Air. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, including the number of fatalities, an airline spokesman said.
There was no immediate comment from Boeing or the US Federal Aviation Administration. South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok, who was appointed as interim leader, has ordered a massive rescue effort.
