Jetstar Flight Returns to Bali After Passenger Tries to Open Emergency Door

23 hours ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jetstar flight JQ-34, en route from Bali to Melbourne, was forced to return to I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport on Monday, March 31, 2025, after a passenger attempted to open an emergency door. The passenger's actions triggered an alarm on the Airbus aircraft when she lifted the cabin door handle.

A fellow passenger recounted the incident via an Instagram post, describing the experience as a "real nightmare" as two hours into the flight, a woman tried to open the emergency exit, expressing a desire to disembark mid-air.

"Had to turn around and land back in Bali for her to get arrested. 260 angry and scared passengers. Police escorted her off plane," she wrote, as reported by The Independent on April 1, 2025.

Australian reality television personality Brooke Jowett, who was on the flight, wrote on social media: “Two hours into our flight, flight attendants start running, people start freaking out and we get told to put our seatbelts on immediately.”

Jowett said that she would be taking a flight to Melbourne the following day. She also shared a photo of passengers collecting their luggage upon their return to Denpasar.

Prior to the attempted door opening, an altercation occurred between the woman and the flight crew. She reportedly wanted to sit in a front-row seat with a reclining feature.

When she attempted to open the emergency door, a male passenger intervened, pulling her away. This individual was later identified as an off-duty police officer, credited with preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

In an audio clip from the cabin, the captain informed passengers that a woman in the rear of the aircraft had tried to open the door and lifted its handle. "We got a door warning at the front of the aircraft... the safest course of action was to come back here and return to land," the pilot announced.

Flight tracking data from FlightAware showed that the plane departed from Denpasar at 20:29 local time, subsequently reversing its course over the Indian Ocean approximately one hour into the flight.

According to the airline, the passenger was removed from the aircraft by local authorities upon landing in Bali. In a statement, Jetstar confirmed that their aircraft returned to Denpasar due to a disruptive passenger who attempted to open a door and behaved inappropriately towards the crew.

"The safety and welfare of our customers and crew is our top priority and we thank them for the way they responded to the situation," Jetstar stated.

The Australian low-cost airline further emphasized that such unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated on their flights. Passengers affected by the flight's cancellation were provided with alternative flight arrangements.
