TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo or Jokowi openly declare that he supports only Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Ridwan Kamil and Central Java gubernatorial candidate Ahmad Luthfi. Why?
After meeting Ridwan Kamil in Kemayoran, Jakarta on Monday, November 18, 2024, Jokowi said he came to offer his support.
"I came because I do support. In Central Java, in Jakarta, I came to support," he said.
The former Jakarta Governor from 2012 to 2014 admitted that he had plans to visit other regions. However, Jokowi explained that the duration of his visit was not feasible.
"There are, but the timing wouldn't allow me to visit all of them," Jokowi said.
Despite officially endorsing Ridwan and his running mate, Suswono, in the Jakarta Regional Elections, Jokowi stated that the final decision still rests with the people of Jakarta.
"Sovereignty lies in the hands of the people, and the people determine everything. We are just making an effort, striving," he said.
Furthermore, Jokowi explained why his support was announced towards the end of the campaign period. He mentioned that the period leading up to election day is crucial for each candidate to win the 2024 Regional Elections.
"Indeed, those decisive moments are in the final stretch," he said. "As the end of the campaign period approaches, all elements should work hard."
Due to Track Record
Prior to this, Jokowi stated that one of the reasons for supporting Ridwan as the Governor of Jakarta is his experience as the Governor of West Java. Additionally, Jokowi considered Ridwan's track record in the field of architecture as a factor that helps him understand urban planning.
"If anyone were to ask me why I support Ridwan Kamil, it is because of his track record. I repeat. Why Ridwan Kamil? Because of his track record," Jokowi said while speaking to volunteers.
Jokowi also urged the people of Jakarta to act in the remaining days before the election day. "If the movement is correct, and everyone is truly striving for the city we love, it can be just like a presidential election," he said.
Jokowi expressed his hope that Ridwan Kamil would achieve at least 51% of the vote during the upcoming election on November 27, 2024.
"In the presidential election, our target is 51%, but the actual result is between 5 to 8.5%," he concluded his speech at the meeting with Ridwan and attending volunteers.
Supporting Luthfi-Yasin
Jokowi was previously seen attending an open campaign of the gubernatorial and vice-gubernatorial candidate pair in Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi-Taj Yasin, in Purwokerto, Banyumas regency, Central Java, on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
At that time, Jokowi bluntly stated that his presence at the Luthfi-Yasin campaign was to support the candidate supported by the Indonesian Coalition of Hope (KIM).
"I came because I support," said the former Mayor of Solo.
When asked about the reason for supporting Luthfi-Yasin, Jokowi did not provide a detailed answer.
"Everyone knows. There's no need to explain," he replied.
Regarding the victory target for the Luthfi-Yasin pair in the 2024 Central Java Regional Elections, Jokowi responded, "It will be seen later because sovereignty lies with the people."
In this regard, he mentioned that it will be up to the people to decide.
"You can't ask me about it," he added.
Jokowi, together with the Luthfi-Yasin pair, participated in a procession from Hotel Aston, where they were staying, to the site of subsidized basic necessities in Hetero Space Purwokerto, riding an open jeep.
Initially, they walked and then continued in the open jeep. From the jeep, they distributed T-shirts.
Two types of T-shirts were distributed. First, white T-shirts featuring a silhouette photo of Luthfi. Then, the second T-shirt was black and contained Jokowi's achievements during his two terms as president. Occasionally, Jokowi pointed towards the Luthfi-Yasin pair behind him.
