TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of workers of the Indonesian textile company, Sritex, will stage a protest in Jakarta next week, confirmed the coordinator of the Sritex Group Labor Union, Slamet Kaswanto.
"The protest will be held on Tuesday to Wednesday, January 14-15, 2025," said Slamet when contacted through a messaging application on Friday, January 3, 2025.
Slamet estimates that 10 thousand Sritex workers will participate in the two-day protest. The workers will depart from Surakarta City on Monday, January 13, boarding 200 buses.
Upon arrival, the protesters will gather at the National Monument. "We will convey our demands for the preservation of Sritex’s business,” said Slamet. He said there are nine target institutions for the protest, including the Supreme Court, which confirmed Sritex's bankruptcy through a cassation ruling.
Slamet said the workers will also target several ministries, particularly those previously appointed by President Prabowo to save the company. Those include the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Manpower, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Trade, and the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
Thousands of Sritex workers also plan to protest in front of the parliament building and the State Palace.
Slamet also expressed his disappointment with the government due to its failure to take concrete steps before Sritex’s bankruptcy status was strengthened through a Supreme Court decision.
After the bankruptcy decision, Sritex's import and export permits are currently frozen, and if the condition continues, Slamet fears more and more workers will be laid off.
The Supreme Court rejected Sritex’s appeal to overturn the Semarang Court’s decision to declare the largest textile company in Indonesia bankrupt. The court rejected the cassation appeal on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
