TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iconic Indonesian singer Titiek Puspa passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the age of 87. Her passing occurred while she was receiving treatment for a brain hemorrhage at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta.
Confirmation of her death was shared by fellow renowned singer Inul Daratista via her Instagram account, following initial reports that were unconfirmed or previously denied by the family.
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rojiun. Rest in peace, Eyang," wrote Inul in her latest social media post, using a common Islamic expression of condolence and "Eyang," an affectionate Indonesian term of respect for an elder, akin to 'grandparent'. The post featured a photograph of Inul with Titiek Puspa, similar to one shared earlier as a tribute to the remarkable career of the late singer whose birth name was Sudarwati.
"I will never forget all your kindness and help, your assistance and guidance so I could be who I am today," wrote Inul Daratista.
According to Inul, Titiek Puspa's influence and presence are irreplaceable, regardless of the passage of time. "Becoming like you is impossible, but I will strive to be a good person and set a good example for everyone—family, children, and relatives—just as you advised and guided me," said Inul, suggesting she was considered one of Titiek Puspa's 'favorites'.
Profile and Career of Titiek Puspa
Born in Tanjung, Tabalong, South Kalimantan on November 1, 1937, Titiek Puspa was initially given the name Sudarwati. Her parents later changed it to Kadarwati, and subsequently to Sumarti. She eventually adopted her famous stage name, Titiek Puspa, incorporating "Puspa" from her father's name, Tugeno Puspowidjojo. She had two children.
Titiek Puspa embarked on her career as an artist by participating in the prestigious "Bintang Radio" (Radio Star) competition in the 1950s. She gained further prominence managing the Papiko operetta troupe, a musical theatre group she founded, which frequently appeared in special broadcasts on Indonesia's national television network, TVRI, particularly during the major holiday of Eid al-Fitr. Through Papiko, she became known for mentoring young talents, embodying artistic leadership and generously sharing her knowledge, earning her the affectionate title 'Mother of All Artists' within the industry.
Her venture into cinema began in 1966 with roles in films such as Di Balik Tjahaya Gemerlapan (Behind the Sparkling Lights) and Minah Gadis Dusun (Minah the Village Girl). During Indonesia's "New Order" era, Titiek Puspa was a highly sought-after performer, frequently invited to sing at the presidential palace. She composed numerous songs, including the very popular 1980s hit Aku Anak Desa (I am a Village Child).
In 2009, Titiek Puspa was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Following intensive treatment, including chemotherapy at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, she was declared cancer-free. Demonstrating resilience and creativity even during her illness, she reportedly composed 61 songs during that period. Titiek Puspa leaves behind an indelible legacy in Indonesian music and entertainment. May she rest in peace.
