Lion Air Adjusts Baggage Policy: Free Allowance Reduced to 10kg

8 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Lion Air has announced an adjustment to its free baggage allowance (FBA) for passengers, effective July 17, 2025. Under the new policy, the complimentary baggage allowance will be reduced from 15 kilograms to 10 kilograms.

According to a statement on lionair.co.id, these new baggage regulations aim to be more practical and align with current travel trends. "Starting July 17, 2025, customers will follow the new, more practical, and relevant free baggage allowance (FBA) regulations, in line with current travel habits," the airline stated on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

The airline explained that most customers now take shorter trips or carry minimal items. This adjustment, they believe, will lead to faster check-in and baggage collection processes, making travel more efficient. Furthermore, this change encourages passengers with larger baggage quantities to utilize Lion Air's cargo services.

Lion Air also stated that this change in baggage regulations is part of its commitment to providing safe, comfortable, and affordable air travel for all customers. The 10-kilogram free baggage allowance will apply to both Lion Air's domestic and international flights.

Low-Cost Carrier Baggage Policies

As a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC), Lion Air noted that they have the flexibility to set their baggage policies and can even offer a zero-kg free baggage allowance when operational needs require it. This is consistent with the Transportation Ministerial Regulation No. 30 of 2021 regarding Minimum Service Standards for Air Passenger Transportation, which includes specific provisions for handling checked baggage.

"Lion Air values the comfort of its customers, so despite being classified as an LCC and permitted to provide a 0kg free baggage allowance according to PM30/2021, Lion Air still provides a free 10kg checked baggage and 7kg carry-on baggage to ensure comfortable travel," the airline affirmed.

What if a passenger brings more than the allotted weight?

Lion Air suggests purchasing Pre-Paid Baggage or additional baggage in advance through the airline's official website or BookCabin. This service is claimed to be more cost-effective than buying extra baggage at the airport.

Customers who purchase or exchange tickets before July 17, 2025, will still receive the previous baggage allowance of 15 kg or 20 kg, depending on their route. However, those who purchase or exchange tickets after this date will be subject to the new 10 kg allowance.
