TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Every year, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) announces a list of finalists who have done the most damage to the world through organized crime and corruption. Many well-known figures in the world are nominated by journalists and the general public to be assessed by judges and parties in the OCCRP network.

"OCCRP has no control over who is nominated, because suggestions come from people all over the world," said the OCCRP statement from its official website on Thursday, January 2, 2024.

Here are some figures who have been declared finalists by OCCRP, one of which is Jokowi from Indonesia.

1. Joko Widodo (Jokowi)

Joko Widodo or Jokowi is one of the finalists for the 2024 OCCRP Organized Crime and Corruption figure. During his term, Jokowi was considered to have weakened democratic values because several of his policies failed to eradicate. The former seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia was considered to be a figure who significantly weakened the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) by OCCRP.

OCCRP highlighted criticism of Jokowi during his intervention in the implementation of the 2024 election. Jokowi was involved in the determination of the Constitutional Court's decision that benefited Gibran Rakabuming Raka to become President Prabowo Subianto's running mate.

2. William Ruto

William Ruto as President of Kenya became the finalist for the 2024 Organized Crime and Corruption figure by OCCRP who was most widely chosen. During his administration, Ruto was considered greedy and corrupt, resulting in failures in economic, health, and education policies, as well as the overall instability of the country's condition which also had an impact on the kidnapping of political opponents.

Ruto's leadership, which was considered rotten, gave rise to a series of demonstrations in Kenya to demand that he resign as the country's leader. The demonstrators, who were dominated by young Kenyans, regretted the high unemployment rate at the productive age level due to the government's failure to address the Kenyan economy.

"He stole everything including public funds, people are suffering without a decent health care system, and people are getting poorer day by day," said one of his voters.

3. Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Erdogan's name has been a finalist for Organized Crime and Corruption figures by OCCRP in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Erdogan succeeded in becoming a three-term leader of Turkey after defeating Kilicdaroglu in the 2023 election.

Erdogan's name is always associated with the divisions in Turkey. For the opposition, Erdogan's victory in the 2023 election has eroded the country's democratic institutions during his 20-year rule, eroded the power of the judiciary, and suppressed dissent. Reported by CNN, Erdogan's government is hampered by a slumping economy. His strategic position in controlling NATO's second largest armed forces has caused conflict because he accused Sweden of protecting Kurdish groups considered terrorists.

4. Sheikh Hasina

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has built great power during her 20-year rule. Hasina became prime minister for the first time after the Awami League won the 1996 elections. Her second term began in 2009. Previously, her name was included in the list of finalists for Organized Crime and Corruption figures in 2023.

In 2024, she was again included as the most corrupt figure. Hasina is considered an autocratic government leader. There are many records of mass arrests of political opponents and activists to extrajudicial killings. The riots in Bangladesh were inevitable. Many parties took action to protest Hasina's policies which were considered detrimental to society, such as the implementation of the civil service quota system. 300 people lost their lives in the riots.

5. Daniel Ortega

Daniel Ortega's leadership is considered to have caused democracy in Nicaragua to collapse. Ortega's name was also one of the finalists for the Organized Crime and Corruption OCCRP figure in 2022. This was based on the dictatorship of the Nicaraguan government.

During his leadership, as reported by CNN, Ortega has used his power to arrest 13 opposition leaders on charges of national security violations without clear evidence. According to human rights groups, this action was a step to eliminate dissent and destroy his rival camp ahead of the 2021 election. His actions succeeded in making Ortega win the election again by paralyzing the opposition.
