TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a magnitude 5.1 tectonic earthquake in the Buol region, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 09:53 western Indonesia time.
"The epicenter is located at coordinates 1.25 north latitude; 121.21 east longitude, exactly in the sea 35 kilometers northwest of Buol, Central Sulawesi at a depth of 39 kilometers," said BMKG director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Daryono, through a written statement on Saturday, November 9, 2024.
Daryono said that based on the epicenter and the hypocenter, this earthquake was considered shallow and caused by the subduction activities of North Sulawesi. "The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that the earthquake has an oblique thrust motion mechanism," he said.
The tremor was felt in Tolitoli and Buol regions with the scale of III-IV MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity). "Modeling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential," he added.
As of 10:12 a.m., Daryono said BMKG's monitoring results have not shown any aftershock seismic activity.
