TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that a majority of Americans, 58%, believe every country in the United Nations (UN) should formally recognize a state of Palestine. This finding, as reported by Arab News, emerges as Israel and Hamas consider a potential ceasefire in their nearly two-year conflict.
According to the poll, 33% of respondents disagreed with recognizing a Palestinian state, while 9% offered no opinion. The six-day survey, which concluded on Monday, was conducted just weeks after three close U.S. allies, Canada, the UK, and France, announced their intent to recognize the State of Palestine, adding to international pressure on Israel.
The survey, released on Wednesday, questioned 4,446 adults across the United States between August 13 and 16, as reported by Al Jazeera. The results indicated a significant partisan divide: 78% of Democrats supported the recognition of Palestine, compared to 41% of Republicans.
Interestingly, fewer Democratic respondents (77%) agreed that "Israel should be recognised as a country by all UN members."
The Trump administration has consistently rejected international efforts to recognize a Palestinian state, dismissing such a move as meaningless.
Most nations have already recognized Palestine. The potential for further recognition by Western countries raises questions about its impact on Israel's ongoing war in Gaza and the continued expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, the two territories that would form a Palestinian state.
Escalating Conflict
This study comes amid growing global criticism of Israel's campaign of destruction, starvation, and displacement in Gaza, which some leading human rights organizations have called genocide.
The international community has increasingly pressured Israel over its actions, particularly the blocking of humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, which has led to widespread famine.
Despite protests from European nations, Israel has pushed ahead with its offensive to seize Gaza City. This campaign risks displacing tens of thousands of people and destroying what remains of what was once Palestine's largest city.
In the West Bank, Israel continues to escalate its military and settler offensive while constructing more settlements in violation of international law.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich celebrated the recently announced plans for 3,400 illegal Israeli housing units between occupied East Jerusalem and Palestinian communities in the West Bank. He framed the construction as an attempt to eliminate the possibility of a Palestinian state.
"The Palestinian state is being erased from the table not by slogans but by deeds. Every settlement, every neighborhood, every housing unit is another nail in the coffin of this dangerous idea," Smotrich said, according to the Times of Israel.
Last year, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful and must end.
U.S. Public Opinion Continues to Shift Against Israel
The survey reflects a continuing shift in U.S. public opinion. A YouGov poll on Tuesday found that 43% of Americans believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, while 28% disagreed.
The recent Reuters/Ipsos poll also found that 59% of Americans believe Israel's military response in Gaza has been excessive, an increase from a similar poll in February 2024, where 53% held that view.
