TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Malaysian Foreign Ministry on Thursday, February 6, 2025, considered the proposal to relocate Palestinians as an act of ethnic cleansing and a violation of international law. The comment was made in response to the proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to take over Gaza.

"Malaysia strongly opposes any proposal that could lead to the forced displacement or movement of Palestinians from their homeland. Such inhumane actions constitute ethnic cleansing and are clear violations of international law and multiple UN resolutions," said the Malaysian Foreign Ministry.

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry supports the two-state solution as a way to achieve peace and stability. Muslim-majority Malaysia strongly supports the Palestinian cause and has long advocated for the two-state solution to the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine. Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has established good relations with Hamas, but has no connection to the armed group.

The rejection of the proposal to relocate Palestinians in Gaza was also opposed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, February 5. He emphasized the importance of preventing "any form of ethnic cleansing" against Palestinians amidst the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

He mentioned the destruction and "unspeakable horror" resulting from the genocide in Gaza. The number of casualties from the Israeli genocide in Gaza has nearly reached 50,000—70 percent of whom are women and children.

"The majority of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure—hospitals, schools and water facilities—has been destroyed. The overwhelming majority of the entire population who have faced displacement after displacement, hunger and disease," he said, as quoted from an official statement.
