TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that negotiations on the Sulawesi Sea maritime boundary with Indonesia will resume next week, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
"On July 29, we will continue the discussion in Jakarta," said PM Anwar during a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as quoted by Antara.
He mentioned that representatives from the states of Sarawak and Sabah will also participate in the meeting on July 29, 2025. According to him, the negotiation on the maritime border of the Sulawesi Sea requires the approval of these two states.
Representatives from Sarawak and Sabah will also express their views on the territorial matters.
"Official meetings involving Singapore or Indonesia, as a rule, always include the Premier of Sarawak and the Chief Minister of Sabah in the delegation," he explained.
Members of the Dewan Rakyat also inquired about whether there were discussions on the Sulawesi Sea during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's visit to Malaysia some time ago.
Anwar stated that President Prabowo has visited Malaysia four times, but it was an informal visit for lunch as friends.
He mentioned that so far there has been no agreement on the maritime boundary of the Sulawesi Sea. According to PM Anwar, formal discussions on the Sulawesi Sea will not take place until July 29.
"So how do we negotiate with friendly countries? We negotiate. But our position is firm," said Anwar.
On that occasion, Anwar also explained about the dispute over Block ND6 and ND7, known as the Ambalat Block.
He mentioned that Malaysia remains adherent to the 1979 map and the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the Sipadan and Ligitan Islands.
Anwar stated that he shares the same spirit as Malaysia's previous prime minister in avoiding tension in disputed areas. He emphasized that Indonesia is a friendly country with a very good relationship with Malaysia.
