TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs has set up 668 social warehouses in disaster-prone areas across the country. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf announced this during a visit to the headquarters of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
"The Ministry of Social Affairs has 668 social warehouses in disaster-prone areas throughout Indonesia. Usually, the nearest social warehouse to the disaster site will approach and provide assistance," Saifullah said in a press release received on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
Saifullah's visit aims to strengthen the cooperation between the Ministry of Social Affairs and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). He mentioned that the cooperation between the Ministry of Social Affairs and the BNPB has been good so far. However, he stressed the need to further improve coordination by strengthening human resources and assigning more concrete tasks in the field.
In supporting BNPB's disaster management efforts, the Ministry of Social Affairs' main role is to provide evacuation and logistics. To this end, the Ministry distributes tents and other emergency logistics through social warehouses throughout Indonesia.
Some of the logistics provided in these social warehouses include evacuation tents, family tents, blankets, clothing for adults and children, ready-to-eat meals, mattresses, and more. In the event of a large-scale disaster, if the buffer stock in a warehouse is insufficient, additional logistics are sent from the nearest warehouse or even from the central logistics warehouse.
Head of BNPB, Military (TNI) Maj. Gen. Suharyanto stated that the cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Social Affairs has been effective, especially in disaster management efforts, such as handling the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Suharyanto emphasized that the joint disaster relief efforts with the Ministry of Social Affairs will continue even after the emergency response period ends.
"We agree that BNPB and the Ministry of Social Affairs will help for the next month, because in other disaster areas, after one month, there is no more help from non-government organizations, so the community is very dependent on government help," Suharyanto said.
