TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, asserts that Tehran does not seek war with the United States and Israel, but will still defend its rights as a country.
As reported by Al Arabiya, the statement was delivered in a written message read on government television on Thursday. This coincides with the 40th day of the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who died on the first day of the conflict, February 28.
Iran Affirms Not Wanting War
In his message, Khamenei asserts Iran's position of not seeking open conflict.
"We did not seek war and we do not want it," he said. But he added, "But we will not renounce our legitimate rights under any circumstances, and in this respect, we consider the entire resistance front as a whole."
This statement refers to Iran's alliances in the region, including in Lebanon, where Israel is still engaged in conflicts with Tehran's allied groups.
Khamenei also asserts that Iran will demand accountability for the attacks that occur.
He stated that the country would not permit those criminal aggressors who attack it to escape punishment, emphasizing a firm commitment to holding them accountable. He added that Iran will demand compensation for all damages, as well as the blood of martyrs and the wounded.
Iran's Victory Claim
According to Al Jazeera reports, Khamenei in the same statement, claims that Iran has achieved a "final victory" in the war against Israel and the United States. He stated that Iran has "astonished the world" throughout the conflict.
Khamenei also calls on the public to remain active in public spaces despite the ceasefire being announced.
"Your voices in public squares are undoubtedly influential in the outcome of the negotiations," he said.
He emphasized that people should not stop considering public action necessary. Furthermore, he reminded the public not to interact with media "supported by the enemy."
This week, Iran and the United States agreed to a two-week ceasefire mediated by Pakistan. The agreement creates opportunities for peace talks amid rising tensions, including attacks in the Gulf region and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
As part of the agreement, Iran agreed to reopen shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. However, there are reports that Tehran will impose fees on passing ships to support reconstruction efforts.
At the same time, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that killed more than 300 people threaten the sustainability of the ceasefire. On Saturday, April 11, 2026, delegations from Iran and the United States are scheduled to meet in Pakistan to continue discussions aimed at ending the conflict.
