Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Sunday, August 10, 2025, that a new offensive in Gaza would begin soon. This announcement, reported by The Arab Weekly, came after the security cabinet approved a controversial plan to take over Gaza City last Friday.
Netanyahu stated that defeating Hamas and freeing the hostages is the only option, specifying that the military will target two remaining Hamas strongholds.
He noted that the operation's timeline is "quite short" and that a primary goal is to establish a safe zone for the civilian population of Gaza City to relocate. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel's goal is border security, not to settle in Gaza.
"The timeline that we set for the action is fairly quickly. We want, first of all, to enable safe zones to be established so the civilian population of Gaza City can move out," he said.
He emphasized that Israel's goal is border security, not to settle in Gaza.
Relocation Plans for Gaza Residents
As reported by Al Arabiya, Netanyahu had previously announced a new offensive plan on May 5, which he described as an intensive military operation to defeat Hamas. At that time, he stated that residents would be relocated for their own protection.
Israeli security officials have indicated that the plan includes "the conquest" of the Palestinian territory and a large-scale relocation of residents to the south. A senior official added that a voluntary relocation program would be part of the operation's objectives.
Domestic and International Warnings
Israeli military leaders have previously warned that a full occupation of Gaza could endanger hostages and lead to prolonged guerrilla warfare.
Several European countries on the UN Security Council, such as Denmark, France, Greece, Slovenia, and the UK, have issued a joint statement, asserting that expanding the operation would only endanger civilians, including hostages, and worsen suffering.
They called the crisis "man-made" and urged an end to starvation. The European Union has also urged Israel to show restraint.
