TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left Tel Aviv on Sunday for Washington to meet with U.S. President America's Donald Trump. As reported by Anadolu, this is to discuss various regional issues, including the Gaza ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement.
In his third visit to the U.S. in six months, Netanyahu is expected to discuss with Trump a new proposal for a Gaza ceasefire and a hostage exchange deal.
"We are working to secure a deal under terms we have agreed to. I sent a negotiating team with clear instructions, and my conversation with President Trump may help move things forward," Yedioth Ahronoth quoted Netanyahu as saying before boarding the plane.
Israel's delegation departed for the Qatari capital, Doha, on Sunday to conduct indirect negotiations with Hamas regarding the possibility of a Gaza ceasefire deal.
"I am committed to these three tasks: freeing and bringing all our hostages, both the living and the fallen, eliminating Hamas's capabilities – removing them from Gaza, and ensuring that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel," Netanyahu said.
He also stated that he would thank Trump for his "unwavering support for Israel, which led to a tremendous victory over our enemy – Iran."
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also joined Netanyahu on his flight, in an unusual procedure.
Hamas said on Friday night that they had conveyed a "positive" response to the mediators regarding recent proposals for a Gaza ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.
Israeli media said that the latest proposal might include the gradual release of half of the living Israeli hostages (10) and half of the remaining hostages (18) over 60 days.
In return, Israel would release more Palestinian prisoners still held in its jails, and begin a partial withdrawal of forces from previously agreed-upon areas in Gaza.
However, there are still major sticking points as Hamas insists that the UN oversees the distribution of humanitarian aid, demands security guarantees against new hostilities after a 60-day ceasefire, and seeks clarity on which Palestinian prisoners will be released.
Meanwhile, Israel insists that Hamas disarm and isolate its leaders, requirements that Hamas has rejected.
Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has unleashed a genocidal war in Gaza, killing over 57,400 Palestinian citizens, the majority of whom are women and children, since October 2023.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the region.
