TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nova Arianto, the assistant coach of the Indonesian national team, has responded to a report in the Italian media outlet Tuttosport, which claims that the PSSI, under the leadership of Erick Thohir, are looking to replace Shin Tae-yong with a European coach. According to Tuttosport, Thohir wants to make the change before Indonesia's two crucial matches in the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers against Australia and Bahrain in March.
The article, entitled "Thohir vuole il mondiale: un ct europeo per l'Indonesia" (Thohir wants the World Cup: a European coach for Indonesia), was published on December 30. It suggests that Shin Tae-yong's approach, which emphasizes physical play, is no longer effective for the Garuda team, which now includes many players from European leagues.
"I honestly have no idea about it," Nova Arianto said when asked about the article in Jakarta on Friday, January 3.
However, Nova clarified that there have been no internal discussions about a coaching change. "You should ask him directly, there hasn't been any talk within the team," said Nova, who also coaches the U-17 national team.
Despite his historic achievements with the Garuda team last year, Shin Tae-yong is under increasing pressure. He led Indonesia to the round of 16 at the 2023 Asian Cup and to the semi-finals of the 2024 Asian U-23 Championship. Most importantly, he led Indonesia to the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The path to the world's most prestigious football event remains open after a win over Saudi Arabia in the sixth match in Jakarta.
However, disappointing performances such as the match against China in October 2024 and the failure to reach at least the semi-finals of the 2024 ASEAN Cup or the AFF Cup have led to sharp criticism of the former South Korean coach, who led his team to the 2018 World Cup.
