TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian airline Pelita Air has officially started using Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made from used cooking oil (UCO) produced and distributed by Pertamina. The debut of Pelita Air's commercial flights using bioaviation fuel took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, on the Jakarta-Bali route.
The President Director of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Mars Ega Legowo Putra, affirmed the smooth distribution of SAF. He mentioned that Pertamina collects the main raw material used for cooking oil from restaurants, households, and small businesses. "With raw materials sourced from the community, the development of SAF not only supports energy transition but also creates a circular economy and opens up new economic opportunities," Mars Ega said in a written statement on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
The launch of bioaviation fuel for commercial flights was also witnessed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno. He stated that the presence of SAF is not only important technically but also strategically in global energy diplomacy. "Indonesia, as the first country in ASEAN to produce its own SAF, must be a pioneer and leader in the region," he said.
Similarly, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana, evaluated the development of SAF in line with the president's direction in the Asta Cita program to strengthen energy resilience and independence. "Pertamina SAF has upgraded its status as it now has globally recognized sustainability certifications," Dadan said.
The inaugural flight event of Pelita Air, fueled with Pertamina SAF, was attended by the Chief of Presidential Staff A.M. Putranto, ministry officials, and the leadership of the Pertamina Group. This includes the Chief Commissioner of Pertamina, Mochamad Iriawan, and the President Director of Pertamina, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, who were present to accompany that moment.
