Petronas Gas Pipeline Explosion in Malaysia Injures Over 100

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A gas pipeline network operated by Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company, Petronas, experienced a leak, resulting in a massive explosion. The subsequent fire quickly spread, posing a threat to nearby villages during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

At least 49 homes were damaged, and 112 people were injured, with 63 requiring hospitalization for burns, respiratory difficulties, and other injuries, as reported by Selangor Deputy Police Chief Mohamad Zaini Abu Hassan, according to the Malaysian news agency Bernama. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The national disaster management unit confirmed that rescue operations for trapped victims are ongoing, and several individuals are receiving treatment for burn injuries.

According to Al Jazeera, Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari stated that 82 people had been successfully rescued. Affected residents will be provided with temporary shelter at the nearest mosque until the situation is under control.

Images and videos of the massive fireball from the explosion circulated widely on social media. Residents reported experiencing a powerful vibration that shook their homes.

"All of a sudden, we heard a loud bang and then total chaos. We immediately left the house and soon saw other residents leaving too,” said a resident living 200 meters from the site of the fire, according to Malaysia’s newspaper The Star.

Petronas issued a brief statement indicating that the pipeline network had been isolated. Disaster mitigation officials reported that the valve had been closed to extinguish the fire.

Petronas also clarified that three fuel filling stations located near the explosion site were not affected but have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. The company further stated that an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
