TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java Regional Police Chief Insp. Gen. Imam Sugianto confirmed that police had arrested three people for the November 17 attack and slashing in Ketapang Lor village, Ketapang Regency, Sampang district. The attack, which went viral on social media as the Sampang Carok slashing, resulted in the death of Jimmy Sugito Putra, a witness for the Sampang regional head election.
Imam confirmed to Tempo on November 20, that the suspects have been arrested. He did not provide further details about the arrest.
One of the suspects, FS, was first arrested on Monday, November 18. Police then arrested two other suspects.
East Java regional police public relations chief Sr/ Comr. Dirmanto was reluctant to reveal the identities of the two newly arrested attackers, saying police were still investigating the case."This information will be released later when the investigation is sufficient," Dirmanto told Tempo through a messaging application on Wednesday.
Jimmy Sugito Putra was killed in the slashing incident in Sampang on November 17, 2024. Jimmy was a witness for Slamet Junaidi-Ahmad Mahfudz, who are running for Regent and Vice Regent in the Regional Heads Elections.
Antara reported that the incident occurred after the regent candidate, Slamet Junaidi, visited a religious figure in Ketapang. Slamet was intercepted by a mob armed with machetes but managed to escape through another route.
The mob then entered the neighborhood where Slamet Junaidi was visiting, and reports indicate that several people were involved in an argument before the attack took place.
Jimmy was attacked by the mob and received slash wounds. He was rushed to Ketapang Regional Hospital but did not survive the bleeding from the fatal wounds inflicted on his face, back, and hands. He passed away on Sunday, November 17 at 5:15 p.m.
