TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis receives "thousands" of letters each day from around the world as he slowly recovers from pneumonia in a hospital in Rome, according to the Italian postal service on Sunday, March 16, 2025 as reported by Malay Mail.

The 88-year-old pope marked one month in Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday, where doctors now consider his condition stable and slowly improving. This comes after a critical period marked by a breathing crisis that endangered his life.

The Italian postal service stated that well-wishers have flooded the city's postal service with letters “from the time of his hospitalisation until today.”

A "surge" in correspondence has been felt at the Fiumicino sorting center, “up to 150 kilogrammes more mail per day,” said unit head Antonello Chidichimo.

“These days, the flow of letters and messages addressed to Pope Francis is particularly intense, a sign of the affection and closeness of the international community,” the statement said.

In a bit of self-promotion, the Italian postal service said they were playing a “fundamental role... in ensuring that every message of support and prayer reaches its destination."

The Vatican has not said when Pope Francis could leave the hospital, where he occupies a special papal suite on the 10th floor.

On Friday, the Vatican again said the pope is "stable" after passing a "quiet night," but did not issue a medical bulletin in the evening as expected. The press office later said there was “no striking news to report."

On Friday, the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis' pontificate, his favorite soccer team, San Lorenzo of Buenos Aires, posted a video message of support, along with messages from Brazilian soccer player Neymar and former Italian player and manager Ciro Ferrara.

The Argentine pope had previously thanked supporters for their letters and prayers, noting their "affection and closeness."

In February, ten days after Pope Francis was hospitalized, the Vatican issued his message, which he quoted as "many messages of affection."

“I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children,” wrote Francis.
