TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Support for Israel's military operations in the besieged Gaza Strip has seen a sharp decline among U.S. adults.
A recent Gallup poll shows that only about a third now approve of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, marking a significant drop from October 2023, when nearly half of Americans supported the invasion.
According to Gallup, as reported by Al Jazeera, just 32 percent of Americans currently approve of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. This represents a 10-point decrease from September 2024, reflecting growing outrage over the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians.
The same poll found that around 60 percent of U.S. adults disapprove of Israel’s offensive, a rise from 45 percent in November 2023.
The survey, conducted between July 7 and 21, 2025, also revealed deep political divisions. While 71 percent of Republican respondents support Israel’s actions, only 8 percent of Democrats said the same.
Age also plays a role in shaping opinion. Only 1 in 10 Americans under the age of 35 expressed approval of Israel's assault on Gaza, compared to about half of those aged 55 and older.
Public opinion of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also soured. The latest Gallup poll found that 52 percent of U.S. adults hold a negative view of Netanyahu, marking his lowest rating since Gallup began tracking it in 1997.
Only 29 percent view him positively, while roughly 20 percent are unfamiliar with him or have no opinion.
“This is the first time we've seen a majority of Americans, with an unfavourable view of him,” said Gallup senior editor Megan Brenan, as quoted by TRT Global.
“All of these questions in this poll show us basically the same story, and it’s not a good one for the Israeli government right now.”
The poll was released as reports of severe hunger and aid restrictions in Gaza drew international condemnation, though it was conducted before former President Donald Trump voiced concern over the worsening humanitarian situation.
This latest survey follows an April poll by the Pew Research Center, which found that a majority of Americans, including 50 percent of Republicans under age 50, now hold a negative opinion of Israel.
Despite shifting public sentiment, U.S. government policy remains firmly pro-Israel. Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza, Washington has sent billions of dollars in military aid and offered consistent diplomatic support at the United Nations.
Both President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden have maintained unwavering backing of Israel’s actions, which have been described as genocidal by multiple human rights organizations.
Israel’s military campaign has reportedly killed over 60,000 Palestinians, destroyed much of Gaza, and led to what the UN describes as “increasing evidence of hunger and widespread starvation” due to ongoing blockades.
Even amid mounting criticism, the U.S. Congress remains overwhelmingly supportive of Israel. Earlier this month, the House of Representatives voted 422 to 6 against a proposal to block $500 million in missile defense funding for Israel.
Meanwhile, a July poll by AP-NORC found that 55 percent of U.S. adults disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Middle East crisis.
