TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the High-Level Conference or G20 Summit at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday, November 18, 2024. Prabowo will participate in several dialogue sessions and hold meetings with the leaders of G20 member countries during the sidelines of the summit.
Prabowo was warmly welcomed by Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva in the state guest reception at the Museum of Modern Art. The discussions to be attended by heads of state will cover the first session 'Fight against Hunger and Poverty' and the second session 'Reform of The Institutions of Global Governance'.
The launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty initiative at the Museum of Modern Art by Lula marked the beginning of the G20 Summit attended by Prabowo. In his speech, the Brazilian President highlighted social disparities in the world - 733 million people still suffer from malnutrition in 2024, despite the world producing nearly 6 billion tons of food per year.
"Hunger is a biological expression of a social disease," stated Lula, quoting Brazilian scientist Josu de Castro.
Lula conveyed that the alliance aims to build international recommendations, effective public policies, and sustainable sources of funding. Currently, the alliance has garnered support from 81 countries, 26 international organizations, 9 financial institutions, as well as various foundations and non-governmental organizations.
During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prabowo also attended the 2nd MIKTA Leaders' Gathering. The gathering was held informally, as stated by the Presidential Secretariat. MIKTA is a consultative forum consisting of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, and Australia.
There is no information regarding Prabowo's statements or speeches at the G20 Summit. However, leaders from major economies will discuss proposals to reduce poverty, solidarity among developing countries, and efforts to reform global institutions.
During the Indonesia-Brazil Business Forum held at the Copacabana Palace, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, November 17, 2024, Prabowo revealed the theme of the G20 Summit in Brazil, which focuses on combating poverty and hunger in line with the government's vision for free nutritious meals. Prabowo believes that every leader and government must be able to feed their people. Therefore, he sees his policy of free nutritious meals as fundamental and strategic.
"Growth, yes. Prosperity is our goal. But, there is no point in high growth if the majority of the population cannot enjoy the growth. If wealth is only owned by a very few people, in my opinion, that is a recipe for a failed state. There must be equal opportunities," said Prabowo.
