Prabowo Calls South Korea a Close Friend of Indonesia

2 hours ago 13

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said South Korea is a close friend of Indonesia as he met South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in a bilateral meeting at Cheong Wa Dae, also known as the Blue House, the Republic of Korea’s presidential office.

In his opening remarks, Prabowo said his first state visit to South Korea reflects Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening the partnership between the two countries. He described the trip as an important one.

“I consider Korea a close friend of Indonesia, and I want to enhance this cooperation,” Prabowo said, as quoted in a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.

Prabowo noted that long-standing ties between nations are often shaped by various dynamics, including potential differences in views. Still, he said openness and honesty are key to maintaining a constructive relationship.

The Indonesian president said Indonesia and South Korea share common interests, particularly as Pacific nations with trade-oriented economies.

“We need a good relationship for the economic prosperity of both our countries, and perhaps we have complementary roles,” he said.

Prabowo added that South Korea’s progress in industry, science, and technology could complement Indonesia’s strengths, including its abundant natural resources and large domestic market.

Beyond economic cooperation, Prabowo also stressed the importance of working together to preserve stability and peace.

“My state visit comes at a time when the world is full of uncertainty and danger. Therefore, relations between countries such as Indonesia and the Republic of Korea are becoming increasingly important,” he said.

He expressed hope that the partnership between Indonesia and South Korea could be elevated into a more comprehensive one, and urged ministers from both countries to move quickly to translate that goal into concrete cooperation.

“Let us ask our ministers to work toward realizing this higher level of partnership,” he said.

Prabowo arrived at the Blue House in South Korea on Wednesday morning local time for talks with President Lee Jae-myung. A live broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat showed the official state welcoming ceremony.

President Lee was seen waiting for Prabowo and his delegation. When the black car carrying the Indonesian president arrived, Lee immediately greeted him. The two leaders were seen shaking hands and embracing.

Prabowo and Lee then took part in the state welcoming ceremony, during which the national anthems of both countries, Aegukga and Indonesia Raya, were played. The ceremony continued with a troop inspection and the introduction of official delegations from both sides.

After the ceremony, Prabowo signed the state guest book and posed for a photo session with Lee. The meeting then continued in a tête-à-tête, or one-on-one format, before proceeding to a broader bilateral meeting involving delegations from both countries.
