TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian State Secretariat Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that President Prabowo Subianto's envoys to attend Pope Francis' funeral had departed for the Vatican on Thursday night, April 24, 2025. They have now arrived in Rome.
"Based on last night's information, they have all departed and based on the time calculation, they have arrived in Rome," said Pras in a written statement on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Prabowo sent the 7th President, Jokowi, to attend Pope Francis' funeral in the Vatican. In addition to Jokowi, Prabowo sent Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai, Finance Deputy Minister Thomas Djiwandono, and former Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan.
Prasetyo said that the envoys carried a personal letter from President Prabowo to be delivered to the Vatican government. The message contained the loss felt by the Indonesians due to the passing of Pope Francis.
The message also contained Prabowo's hope for the spirit of Pope Francis to continue advocating for the weak.
"We hope that Pope Francis' spirit, to stand with the weak, with the poor, to stand up for the oppressed, these are the values of humanity that Pope Francis left behind, and we must carry them forward," he said.
Executive Director of PARA Syndicate, Virdika Rizky Utama, previously stated that President Prabowo Subianto sent a political blunder message by sending the 7th President, Jokowi, to Pope Francis' funeral in the Vatican. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) nominated Jokowi as the most corrupt figure in 2024.
According to Virdika, Jokowi's track record is already recorded in international political memory. Although only nominated, Jokowi's reputation is already associated with corruption.
"Sending Jokowi is like sending a blunder message. Indonesia is sending a figure suspected by the world public to a place strictly guarded morally. This is not about the law, this is a political message," he said when contacted on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Pope Francis passed away after returning from the hospital. He was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Poly Clinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, after suffering from bronchitis for several days.
Pope Francis' condition gradually deteriorated. Doctors diagnosed Pope Francis with bilateral pneumonia on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. After 38 days in the hospital, the late Pope returned to his residence in the Vatican at Casa Santa Marta for recovery.
