TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto disclosed that his current top priority is boosting Indonesia’s economy. He conveyed the statement in a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, November 17, 2024, after a meeting with the U.N. Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.
Guterres said Indonesia is a key partner of the U.N. When asked about his possible attendance at the U.N. General Assembly in person, the president said that he’ll “see the development.”
“Of course, I will focus on improving the national economy for the first months and years of my term,” he said.
Prabowo departed for his first official overseas tour as Indonesia’s president on November 8. Since then, he has graced China, the U.S., and Peru for APEC Summit.
He is currently in Brazil for the G20 Summit and will head for the U.K. after. “I’m also going to stop by several Middle Eastern countries, but we’ll have to see about the dates,” he said.
President Prabowo Subianto previously claimed that Indonesia has had good economic and fiscal policies in recent years. The government maintained a 5 percent growth rate post-COVID-19 pandemic and an inflation rate of 2 percent.
Indonesia, however, still faced challenges that the former Defense Minister intended to address. "I would say we still have poverty at a large scale which I’m determined to eradicate. And we do have a significant percentage of our children malnourished,” said Prabowo in his keynote speech at the APEC CEO Summit in Lima, Peru, on Thursday, November 14, 2024, as quoted from a video by
The economic growth, which has been around 5 percent in the past 10 years of Jokowi's administration, falls below the 7 percent target during his campaign. Prabowo sets a target to achieve 8 percent economic growth during his tenure.
